残暑お見舞い = ZANSHO o´mimai
= HAPPY SUMMER GREETINGS
"The season of "Risshu=立秋= first Autumn signs" has come,
but it seems to be mere words,
when the heat still lasts day after day.
Please stay healthy and take good care of yourself."
This is a sample text
of a traditional Japanese Summer Greeting Card.

JAPANESE SUMMERS ARE SO HOT,
THAT PEOPLE EVEN SEND OUT
SO CALLED
"SUMMER GREETING CARDS"
残暑お見舞い
TO ENQUIRE FOR THE WELLBEING
OF FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES.
What do the Japanese letters actually mean?
残 = ZAN = REMAINING (even after August 7)
暑 = SHO = HEAT
お見舞い = VISIT TO ENQUIRE AFTER SOMEBODY´S HEALTH/WELLBEING
When the calendar day of
"Risshu = 立秋 = begin of autumn"
has passed (either August 7 or August 8)
and you still have not sent out a Summer Greeting Card
the etiquette demands that you
use the words "残暑" = ZANSHO = Remaining Heat after August 7 (despite first signs of autumn)
to address your Summer Greetings.
