As Symbol of the starting Spring Season (Risshun)
you throw out BAD LUCK with the beans,
JUST AS THIS GEISHA in KYOTO,
chanting
ONI WA SOTO, FUKU WA UCHI
BAD SPIRITS OUT
GOOD LUCK IN
you throw out BAD LUCK with the beans,

All of this started in Japan´s ancient capital Kyoto,
where Emperor Uda (see photo below) in the 9th century
chased away an ogre by throwing roasted beans in his eyes.
